Light-weight piglets – hypothermia looming
Taking care of rapid colostrum intake
An environmental temperature below 34°C is critical for newborn piglets. (Source: Soren Tobberup Hansen, Aarhus University, 2013)
Because hypothermic pigs
- require more time after birth to ingest adequate colostrum
- generally ingest less colostrum
Be aware of:
- Birth weight and vitality of piglets at birth
- Imminent energy supply
TIP: Splitnursing - Avoiding disturbing interventions i.e. vaccinations during the first days of life
